Learning to Shape Birmingham

Learning to Shape Birmingham is a conference held by Birmingham Education Partnership (BEP) which is built by Birmingham Head Teachers focusing on the issues that impact on Birmingham’s schools and to start shaping Birmingham’s education future.

The Challenge

BEP wanted us to create a visual identity which represented ‘academic, social and civic education’ and the coming together of schools. From this visual identity, we were asked to design a range of conference materials, including attractive invitations and name badges, an electronic delegate document with sponsorship and exhibiting information, a clear and informative conference programme, and a website landing page to act as a main source of information for attendees.

Our Response

We began by meeting with our client to discuss what it was they wanted the identity to represent. The response was ‘academic, social and civic education’. After ruling out numerous shapes, we choose a hexagon which represented the points of different schools. The coloured areas within the hexagon reflects each academic, social and civic element while ‘shaping the future’.

By using the colours within the logo and the shapes making up the logo, a visual identity was formed. A striking and colourful identity which would capture the audience in a unique and creative way.

The invitation reflected on the triangles used within the logo to create a foldable invitation which would stand up on the desk as a keepsake invitation displaying ticket prices and a brief summary.

The conference needed sponsors and exhibitors so we produced an A4 electronic document in which informed opportunities using colour blocks from the logo to define each section.

For the conference itself, we produced a printed A4 programme displaying speakers, exhibitors, venue map and a day schedule. Along with this, we branded up badges for the delegates to wear. We ensured that these were double sided and laminated so that through wear, they would still look professional throughout the day and if turned around, the name would always be visible.

A conference landing page was a vital part of this project as it would inform delegates about key information prior to event. Minimal pages were used to keep the site clean and straight to the point.

Working closely with the client meant we could understand the importance of the items and create items in which would be useful and inform the audience.
